2004年博士研究生模拟试卷题(非英语专业) {.QEc0-
Part I Reading Comprehension (30%) Z2TL#@
Passage One 1jN-4&
When it comes to the slowing economy, Ellen Spero isn’t biting her nails just yet. But the 47-year-old manicurist isn’t cutting, filling or polishing as many nails as she’d like to, either. Most of her clients spend $12 to $50 weekly, but last month two longtime customers suddenly stopped showing up. Spero blames the softening economy. “I’m a good economic indicator,” she says. “I provide a service that people can do without when they’re concerned about saving some dollars.” So Spero is downscaling, shopping at middle-brow Dillard’s department store near her suburban Cleveland home, instead of Neiman Marcus. “I don’t know if other clients are going to abandon me, too” she says. f2^r[kPX"
Even before Alan Greenspan’s admission that America’s red-hot economy is cooling, lots of working folks had already seen signs of the slowdown themselves. From car dealerships to Gap outlets, sales have been lagging for months as shoppers temper their spending. For retailers, who last year took in 24 percent of their revenue between Thanksgiving and Christmas, the cautious approach is coming at a crucial time. Already, experts say, holiday sales are off 7 percent from last year’s pace. But don’t sound any alarms just yet. Consumers seem only concerned, not panicked, and many say they remain optimistic about the economy’s long-term prospects, even as they do some modest belt-tightening. tcLnN:
Consumers say they’re not in despair because, despite the dreadful headlines, their own fortunes still feel pretty good. Home prices are holding steady in most regions. In Manhattan, “there’s a new gold rush happening in the $4 million to $10 million range, predominantly fed by Wall Street bonuses,” says broker Barbara Corcoran. In San Francisco, prices are still rising even as frenzied overbidding quiets. “Instead of 20 to 30 offers, now maybe you only get two or three,” says john Deadly, a Bay Area real-estate broker. And most folks still feel pretty comfortable about their ability to find and keep a job. t*>R`,j
Many folks see silver linings to this slowdown. Potential home buyers would cheer for lower interest rates. Employers wouldn’t mind a little fewer bubbles in the job market. Many consumers seem to have been influenced by stock-market swings, which investors now view as a necessary ingredient to a sustained boom. Diners might see an upside, too. Getting a table at Manhattan’s hot new Alain Ducasse restaurant need to be impossible. Not anymore. For that, Greenspan & Co. may still be worth toasting. eU<]o< \Qo

Passage Two WHlYo5?
New York’s American Museum of Natural History – the largest nature and anthropology museum in the world – turns 125 this year, and is readying a gala birthday bash to celebrate. Yet the venerable institution is simultaneously looking into the future under the leadership of a young new president. 2D:fJ~|-[
A museum where the Pleistocene Epoch is considered the day before yesterday might not be expected to put its own evolution on a fast track but when its board of trustees selected Ellen Futter – a dynamic, 44-year-old executive without a scientific background – to take charge last year, the natural – history museum showed that it has no intention of being an institutional dinosaur. 4E+hRKuo ,
In a city teeming with world-class art museums, libraries, orchestras, and opera and dance companies, the American Museum of Natural History lacks a certain cachet – at least among major donors and philanthropies that support cultural institutions. Ms. Futter, the former president of Barnard College in New York, is expected to heighten the museum’s profile and help it complete more effectively for private and public funds. *P#WDXRwd
Announcing Futter’s selection last June to succeed Dr. George Langdon, Jr. (she actually took office in December), board chairman William Golden said, “What prevailed were her leadership qualities, administrative skills, financial acumen, and demonstrated fund-raising ability.” Mr. Golden noted that Futter will be backed up by administrators with the scientific training she lacks. ^|TG$`M(w
The museum is more than just a repository for rocks, bones, and primitive tools. Its staff of some 200 scientists and curators engage in ground-breaking research in new fields like molecular biology and global warming as well as in such traditional fields as paleontology. Each year the museum sponsors some 150 scientific field projects around the globe. ({NAMc*
Among her primary goals, Futter says, are to increase public awareness of the museum’s relevance to contemporary issues such as protecting the environment and preserving biodiversity, and to make the museum more of a force in science education. +e-G,%>9
Futter is the first woman, and undoubtedly one of the youngest people, ever to lead a major cultural institution in New York City. She is accustomed to shattering stereotypes, however. She was just 31 and a lawyer with a large New York law firm in 1980 when she was tapped to be president of her undergraduate alma mater, Barnard, a prestigious all-women’s college affiliated with Columbia University. During her 13 years at the college’s helm, Futter added two dormitories, spearheaded curriculum reform, tripled Barnard’s endowment, and oversaw a surge in student applications. \#rIQOPl?
Asked in an interview how, without experience as an executive, she successfully tackled the large administrative and financial responsibilities of her new job at Barnard, Futter says with a laugh, “I got a lot of no-the-job training.” Qu7 T[ <
It’s well that Futter is a quick study, for she will also require4 plenty of OJT to guide a museum that comprises 23 interconnected buildings housing 40 exhibition halls, plus research laboratories, teaching facilities, a large natural-history library, and storage areas for more than 300 million specimens and artifacts. fm^@i;D
In trying to bolster scientific literacy, Futter says she will seek further ways to capitalize on one of the natural-history museum’s singular assets: the “awe” its 50-foot-tall Barosaurus and other exhibits inspire in many visitors. x3u4v~ "-
“Through awe, we can interest people in the process of education on issues important to all of us, “ Futter says. H_0/f8GwnG

Passage 3 .@"q$\
While there is little systematic work relating foreign language learning strategies to success, there are a number of observations which can be made about individuals who are good language learners. 0I{gJSK.,
I have been able to isolate some of the individuals by observing students in classrooms in California and Hawaii, by observing myself and talking to other good language learners and by eliciting observations from some second language teachers. As I have begun to observe classes, what fascinates me is how often the teacher plows ahead with the lesson seemingly with little awareness of what is going on in each student, and often without directing the attention of the poorer students to how the successful student arrived at his answer. That is, many foreign language teachers are concerned with finding the best method or with getting the correct answer, yet the teachers fail to attend to the learning process. If they attended to it more, they might be able to tailor their input to their students' needs and might be able to provide their students with techniques that would enable them to learn on their own. Indeed, no course could ever teach all we need to know about a language, and the students must find the means to help themselves, when the teacher is not around. U#n#7G6fRp
The task of observing these strategies is a complicated one because the strategies necessarily involve cognitive processes which neither the learner nor the teacher may be able to specify. However, when our attention is focused on observing these strategies, I think we may find it easier to isolate some of them. Just recently, I discovered that by using video tapes we hope to help learners and teachers see what is going on in the classroom. We hope to be able, as well, to abstract the learner strategies by interviewing the learner about his behavior during a particular classroom while showing them a tape of their own behavior. kqb0>rYa
In spite of the fact that we are only beginning to isolate these strategies, I think that it is useful to list some of the ones found thus far. They remain general but give an idea of the kind of strategies I think we ought to be looking for. (374 words) N-g8}03

Passage 4 O)R(==P26P
Americans today don’t place a very high value on intellect. Our heroes are athletes, entertainers, and entrepreneurs, not scholars. Even our schools are where we send our children to get a practical education —— not to pursue knowledge for the sake of knowledge. Symptoms of pervasive anti-intellectualism in our schools aren’t difficult to find. f DgD@YCD
“Schools have always been in a society where practical is more important than intellectual,” says education writer Diane Razitch. “Schools could be a counterbalance.” Razitch’s latest bock, Left Back: A Century of Failed School Reforms, traces the roots of anti-intellectualism in our schools, concluding they are anything but a counterbalance to the American distaste for intellectual pursuits. ~9Cz6yF
But they could and should be. Encouraging kids to reject the life of the mind leaves them vulnerable to exploitation and control. Without the ability to think critically, to defend their ideas and understand the ideas of others, they cannot fully participate in our democracy. Continuing along this path, says writer Earl Shorris, “We will become a second-rate country. We will have a less civil society.” s]27l3)B
“Intellect is resented as a form of power or privilege,” writes historian and professor Richard Hofstadter in Anti-Intellectualism in American life, a Pulitzer Prize winning book on the roots of anti-intellectualism in US politics, religion, and education. From the beginning of our history, says Hofstadter, our democratic and populist urges have driven us to reject anything that smells of elitism. Practicality, common sense, and native intelligence have been considered more noble qualities than anything you could learn from a book. ?v}Bd!'+P
Ralph Waldo Emerson and other Transcendentalist philosophers thought schooling and rigorous book learning put unnatural restraints on children:“We are shut up in schools and college recitation rooms for 10 or 15 years and come out at last with a bellyful of words and do not know a thing.”Mark Twain’s Huckleberry Finn exemplified American anti-intellectualism. Its hero avoids being civilized —— going to school and learning to read —— so he can preserve his innate goodness. n,M)oo1G
Intellect, according to Hofstadter, is different from native intelligence, a quality we reluctantly admire. Intellect is the critical, creative, and contemplative side of the mind. Intelligence seeks to grasp, manipulate, re-order, and adjust, while intellect examines, ponders, wonders, theorizes, criticizes and imagines. }iBC@`mg(
School remains a place where intellect is mistrusted. Hofstadter says our country’s educational system is in the grips of people who “joyfully and militantly proclaim their hostility to intellect and their eagerness to identify with children who show the least intellectual promise.” ^] p

[71] Sophisticated new materials would emerge to save lives (artificial hearts, shatterproof glass, bulletproof vests), conserve energy (home insulation, lightweight cars), and expand human horizons (around the globe via aircraft, across the solar system via spacecraft, and through the World Wide Web via computer). And in the 21st century, a new generation of “super synthetics” promises to again reshape our world and ease many of the planet’s most pressing problems. `CPZPp,l6`
[72]To date, hundreds of different polymers (聚合物) have been created --- some feather light but stronger than steel, others impervious to scorching heat or arctic freeze--- and new plastics are in the works with even more impossible qualities, such as the ability to “heal” themselves and “remember” to change shape and function in varying conditions. These sophisticated polymers promise to remold life dramatically. In medicine, researchers say plastics can extend life by 20 years by acting as mini-robots to repair organ damage and clean blood vessels, and as vehicles speeding treatments like chemotherapy to their target. r$94J'_
The fact that not a single plastic item was found aboard the Titanic, sunk in 1912, gives some idea of how fast the breakthroughs have happened and how massive their repercussions have been. With each new material concocted, stumbled upon, or lucked into, entire industries have been born or transformed. Since the dawn of industrialization, a serious hunt was on for natural resource substitutes: “ivory” that wouldn’t require slaughtering elephants, “wood” that wouldn’t rot, “metal” that wouldn’t corrode. ZDW,7b% U
[73]By 1979, plastic production surpassed that of steel, ushering in what Stephen Fenichell, author of <<Plastic: The Making of a Synthetic Century>>, calls the Plastic Age, a title as indicative of human progress as the Iron Age or the Bronze Age. Long-lasting superplastics are fast replacing metal in buildings, machines, and vehicles. Virtually all of the data of the Information Age are stored on plastic, from computer components to DVDs. [kVpzpGr
Only a third of durable plastics now find a second life. The newest plastics hold out the promise of never needing to be thrown away, thanks to self-healing microcapsules inside the material itself. When cracked open by injury or age, the materials would release a fresh supply of the polymers to refortify, say, the bumper of a car or the nose of a 747. [SKP|`I>I

(841 字) w*|=k~z

With the advent of the phase of information economy, the terms “teamwork”, “intellectual property rights” and “competition” have already begun to creep into the popular vocabulary. No one can deny the fact that nowadays information and knowledge are growing to the extent that no individual can hope to master everything. Only by combining the knowledge of many individuals can power be attained. In other words, the trend of the information era is toward teamwork rather than individualism. CLFxq@%nu~
However, many of Chinese scientists are used to learning and doing research individually. One of the reasons is that our education systems are often based on competition: each student is a rival to the others in pursuit of the exam results or a place on the next rung of the ladder. Collaborative learning and working are not given a strong enough role in the system, and therefore a teamwork approach is not developed. 3_ j C sX
At the turn of the new century, it is high time that we needed to develop skills of collaboration and teamwork in our future lives and careers. Any individual should be encouraged and guided to grasp these skills to share each individual’s knowledge and skills to achieve our dream--- to build a well-off society in an all round way in China in the near future.    The environment varies with different places, but it includes everything in our surroundings, and all the conditions that affect our lives. The scientific study of the environment is called ecology, which sometimes may only refer to the relationship of living things to their surroundings. When the ecology is out of balance, some of the species have been extinguished or perhaps new ones have been introduced. t}c}@i_c
Among all the living things, man has done the most to upset the ecology out of greed, wastefulness and ignorance. It is man who has polluted the earth and air, wasted the natural resources, and made the world so over-populated. The increasing overpopulation brings a series of trouble, such as lack of food and draining of natural resources. As a result, vast areas that were once fertile lands have turned into deserts. The Sahara Desert is a good example. 9qu24zz$P
Now the situation is getting out of hand. Man is responsible for his wrongdoing. To remedy his ills and rescue the earth, effective measures have to be taken immediately. (173 words)

A Blind Zone in Childr-Nutrition PW//8lsR
This article reveals a mistaken idea in child-raising which deserves correcting. Most parents take it for granted that children should eat more animal foods such as chicken, meat and fish than grain food because the former are far more expensive and the more expensive the food is the more nutritious it is. However, this is, in fact, a mistaken idea which has lead to malnutrition among many city kids. This is indicated in a survey recently made in Shanghai. {i}Q}OgYq
What parents don’t know is that carbohydrate in grains, starch and sugar, the main and most inexpensive nutrient for energy supply, is of equal importance in metabolism. The energy it supplies is the main source of calories in human bodies, about 60% of the total amount of calories. If there is a lack of calories provided by carbohydrate, protein and fat will be used up to provide the heat and thus can’t play their original roles in the body. Consequently, it results in a retarded development in the children and even malnutrition. d<'Yt|zt
Apparently, the solution to the problem is to provide kids with a well-balanced food containing protein, carbohydrate and many other nutrients, none of which can be done without. M@X#[w:

In the past several years, many Chinese college students have come to accept psychological consultation(PC) they used to reject. In 1994, many students didn’t care to think about the consultation while in 1996, over 90% of 2132 students in a survey answered the related questionnaires carefully. PC is now gradually accepted by college students in China. <.(/#=2
Surveys indicate that 70-80% college students have psychological problems and 20.3% have such obstacles. There have been reports on many severe cases resulting from misunderstanding and lack of PC. In view of this, many universities in Nanjing have set up psychological healthcare service for students. Many students have corrected their misunderstanding about PC and bravely asked the consultants for help, which has greatly helped them overcome their mental obstacles. Even some military cadets have begun to consult experts for advice. Experts point out that prompt consultation can prevent mental problems from developing into obstacles, mental illnesses and even suicide. k\<Ln w
University psychological consultation, young as it is, has made remarkable progress and grown into a unique course in universities. Though it contributed to students’ healthy growth, it still has a long way to go to be fully understood and appreciated by both students and faculties. zomNjy*

Aging usually brings about recession in many bodily functions such indigestion, hypertension, arteriosclerosis, and other metabolic dysfunctions. However, scientists find that these hypofunctions are actually caused by irrational diets or eating habits. This article discusses this problem and the solution to it. Z:$b)+2:\
First, balanced diet with more vegetables than animal food is especially good for the old people. Second, less staple food and less salt in food should be suggested for the aged because overconsumption of these two can lead to cardiovascular diseases. Third, more bean food can replace proteins such as eggs and fat as sources of protein. Fourth, light food should be taken in instead of fat and oily foods which usually contribute to cardiovascular diseases. Fifth, doctors always advise people eat more fruit to regulate their digestion, metabolism and cardiovascular balance. "}+/ 0$F
In a word, a balanced diet, more vegetable food instead of fat food are of the first significance to the health of the aged and a long life. ;OJ0}\*iP8

Recently, more attention has been paid to a behavioral prescription for various and physical diseases. It includes laughter, sports, dancing and even crying. These methods have different functions. >b?)WNk
Laughter activates over 80 muscles. In laughing, smooth muscles in organs contract and help improve digestion. Crying can give vent to harmful chemicals in the body accumulated by stress. Sports and dancing can relieve chronic illness such as bronchitis, back pain, diabetes, etc. that medication alone can’t do. '0$[Ujc
Many diseases of today are caused by bad mental conditions, work and stress, family problems, etc. Medication doesn’t usually effect in these cases because it doesn’t treat the cause of the ailments. Behavioral prescription, with its physical and mental massage like sports and dancing, can help patients stay off the cause of their diseases. Therefore, it is advocated by many doctors and health experts. hBE >ea
It is expected that behavioral prescription will applied more widely as an effective therapy in the near future.f HYmUxheN2

Writing Drill 7 Smoking and Health S)|b%mVwR
It is not until recently that smoking has been firmly proved to be hazardous to health. It irritates the throat and respiratory passages. It sometimes leads to poor appetite, nausea, short breath, and irregular heartbeat. More importantly, smoking is associated with chronic and fatal diseases of respiratory tract. Evidence shows that smokers are more likely than nonsmokers to develop cancer of the lungs, throat, tongue, and jaw, emphysema and bronchitis as well. As a result, many nations have made enormous efforts to warn people of the dangers of smoking. :=eUNH
While smoking, particles of tobacco tar and smoke slow down the work of cilia. The tar collected in the lungs can cause cancer. Moreover, nicotine in tobacco can be simulating by affecting various centers on the medulla oblongata region of the brain. It can affect other physiological process that in turn affect the respiratory center in the brain. It can also influence other centers that slow down the action of the heart, constrict the arteries, and cause vomiting. k K|+W,
In brief, smoking does nothing but harm to people’s health. Therefore, smokers of any age or kind should try to give it up. $-fY8V3[

Writing Drill 9 Handwashing and Health fr2w k}/b
Hospital infection is one of the causes of morbidity and mortality. The risk of transmitting pathogens by the hands of health care workers (HCWs) is increasingly big today. A simple and effective way of prevention is handwashing. A_|FsQ6$P
But it is found that HCWs don’t always wash their hands before and after patient contacts. Semmelweis, a Viennese doctor in 1847, believed that high puerperal fever rate in some wards was caused by the hands of some medical students. He ordered that all students wash their hands with chlorinated lime before and between all patient contacts. As a result, the rate fell sharply. His methods were used by some other hospitals but his beliefs were ignored largely at that time. j1+Y=@MA
In the 1980s, a government health organization recommended that handwashing be imposed. But it has not been well compiled, even in ICUs, despite some efforts to improve compliance. The traditional handwashing practice has not been changed yet. ScoHtX3
HCWs have their own excuse for the resistance, such as no time, skin irritation, etc. Some say they have done it but surveys prove otherwise. With more multidrug-resistant pathogens on the increase. HCWs have to know that handwashing means health. HCWs: wash your hands before or between patient contacts. P[8N58#
pPp nO
Writing Drill 10 Dangerous Factors in Maturing ye2Oh7
On their way to adulthood, adolescens are faced with many dangerous factors. These may include sexual encounters with HIV carriers, violence, mental and sexual abuse, drug abuse, smoking, as well as the negligence from the adults. !OgoV22
What can doctors do to make the teenagers’ world a safer place? Perhaps we should first call for attention from the medical profession to the long ignored needs of teenagers. Some critics suggest that adolescent medicine become a medical subspecialty for more and proper attention to teenagers’ needs. Of course, there are some difficulties such as policymakers’ focus on more general practitioners whereas adolescents are poorly served by the medical community. 0M +tKFb
Adolescents deserve primary care that is attentive to their special needs. The best way is to encourage policymakers to be interested in adolescent medicine. One of the ways for this is to require most medical students and trainees to master the skills needed to treat teenagers. }h6z&:qA[?
Writing Drill 14 Psychological Care of Medical Patients F &}V65
There are more and more physically ill people accompanied by psychiatric morbidity, which can be physically and mentally harmful if not treated promptly and properly. 26K~m@
However, there is a lack of psychiatric care of these patients, which has to be addressed in no time. There are some cost-effective treatments for psychiatric disorder in physically ill people. But few hospitals arrange formal services for these patients, which may not be efficient in the future. Some health service reforms have also affected the formerly cooperative relationship between psychiatrists and general hospital doctors. Pressure on beds in both psychiatry and general medicine makes the already difficult task of caring for patients with coexisting mental and physical illness harder. Besides, increased consumerism and heightened awareness of coexistence of mental and physical illness adds to demand for relevant services. SH|$Dg
In view of this situation, some British psychiatrists and physicians suggested that doctors and nurses learn to identify mental problems in their patients and offer psychological care and refer for psychiatric help. In their report, they also provided some relevant knowledge and approaches to treatment and psychiatric services. 4HE4e
0+pJv0u
