2015吉林大学考博英语真题阅读理解精练 [mG!-.ll
Bernard Bailyn has recently reinterpreted the early history of the |NWHZo
United States by applying new social research findings on the 9!dG Xq
experiences of European migrants. In his reinterpretation, migration [[ll4|
becomes the organizing principle for rewriting the history of q5) K
preindustrial North America. His approach rests on four separate CX]L'
propositions. >5 2%^ ?
The first of these asserts that residents of early modern England Y7')~C`up^
moved regularly about their countryside; migrating to the New World 60xL.Z
was simply a “natural spillover”. Although at first the colonies (De>k8
held little positive attraction for the English — they would rather :=:m4UJb
have stayed home — by the eighteenth century people increasingly #9HX"<5
migrated to America because they regarded it as the land of mPo.Z"uy7
opportunity. Secondly, Bailyn holds that, contrary to the notion that zS`KJVm
used to flourish in America history textbooks, there was never a qv<^%7gq
typical New World community. For example, the economic and CFu^i|7o
demographic character of early New England towns varied considerably. }LoMS<O-[
Bailyn’s third proposition suggest two general patterns LMLrH.
prevailing among the many thousands of migrants: one group came as {r#uD5NJ/
indentured servants, another came to acquire land. Surprisingly, KppYe9?
Bailyn suggests that those who recruited indentured servants were the $gCN[%+j
driving forces of transatlantic migration. These colonial 1So`]N4
entrepreneurs helped determine the social character of people who &_\;p-1:
came to preindustrial North America. At first, thousands of unskilled @qB>qD~WsD
V \/Qik{h
laborers were recruited; by the 1730’s, however, American employers i*T -9IP
demanded skilled artisans. "1 UpoF'w
Finally, Bailyn argues that the colonies were a half-civilized 6!([Hu#= *
hinterland of the European culture system. He is undoubtedly correct zd{sw}
to insist that the colonies were part of an Anglo-American empire. `r0lu_.$]4
But to divide the empire into English core and colonial periphery, x WM?E1@
as Bailyn does, devalues the achievements of colonial culture. It is _\{/#J;lN
true, as Bailyn claims, that high culture in the colonies never \$gA2r
matched that in England. But what of seventeenth-century New England, ^4et; F%
where the settlers created effective laws, built a distinguished 7JBr{3;eS
university, and published books? Bailyn might respond that New apnpy\in
England was exceptional. However, the ideas and institutions Emw]`
developed by New England Puritans had powerful effects on North Qkc 9X0J!
American culture. VH vL:z
Although Bailyn goes on to apply his approach to some thousands v@{VQVx
of indentured servants who migrated just prior to the revolution, he pwV~[+SS_
fails to link their experience with the political development of the ~g;)8X;;+
United States. Evidence presented in his work suggests how we might Zqb*-1Qw"*
make such a connection. These indentured servants were treated as p$` ^A
slaves for the period during which they had sold their time to American .kJu17!
employers. It is not surprising that as soon as they served their time KEf1GU6s
they passed up good wages in the cities and headed west to ensure their RMdU1@
personal independence by acquiring land. Thus, it is in the west that G3 h"Eo?>g
a peculiarly American political culture began, among colonists who Rm~8n;7oOr
_,igN>
were suspicious of authority and intensely anti-aristocratic. nswhYSX
