Passage 1 c?p0#3%L#

Questions 51 to 54 are based on the following passage. }j5R@I6P

Adam Smith, writing in the 1770s, was the first person to see the importance of the division of labor and to explain part of its advantages. He gives as an example the process by which pins were made in England.

“One man draws out the wire; another strengthens it; a third cuts it; a fourth points it; a fifth grinds it at the top to prepare it to receive the head. To make the head requires two or three operations. To put it on is a separate operation, to polish the pins is another. And the important business of making pins is, in this manner, divided into about eighteen operations, which in some factories are all performed by different people, though in others the same man will sometimes perform two or three of them.”

Ten men, Smith said, in this way, turned out twelve pounds of pins a day or about 4,800 pins per worker. But if all of them had worked separately and independently without division of labor, none of them could have made twenty pins in a day and perhaps not even one.

There can be no doubt that division of labor is an efficient way of organizing work. Fewer people can make more pins. Adam Smith saw this but he also took it for granted that division of labor is in itself responsible for economic growth and development and that it accounts for the difference between expanding economies and those that stand still. But division of labor adds nothing new; it only enables people to produce more of what they already have.

Passage 2 l#b:^3

Questions 55 to 58 are based on the following passage. $B<~0'6}

A quality education is the ultimate liberator. It can free people from poverty, giving them the power to greatly improve their lives and take a productive place in society. It can also free communities and countries, allowing them to leap forward into periods of wealth and social unity that otherwise would not be possible.

For this reason, the international community has committed itself to getting all the world’s children into primary school by 2015, a commitment known as Education for All.

Can education for all be achieved by 2015? The answer is definitely “yes”, although it is a difficult task. If we now measure the goal in terms of children successfully completing a minimum of five years of primary school, instead of just enrolling for classes, which used to be the measuring stick (量尺) for education, then the challenge becomes even more difficult. Only 32 countries were formerly believed to be at risk of not achieving education for all on the basis of enrollment rates. The number rises to 88 if completion rates are used as the criterion.

Still, the goal is achievable with the right policies and the right support from the international community. 59 of the 88 countries at risk can reach universal primary completion by 2015 if they bring the efficiency and quality of their education systems into line with standards observed in higher-performing systems. They also need significant increases in external financing and technical support. The 29 countries lagging farthest behind will not reach the goal without unprecedented rates of progress. But this is attainable with creative solutions, including use of information technologies, flexible and targeted foreign aid, and fewer people living in poverty.

A key lesson of experience about what makes development effective is that a country’s capacity to use aid well depends heavily on its policies, institutions and management. Where a country scores well on these criteria, foreign assistance can be highly effective.

55. In the first paragraph, the author suggests that a quality education can ______.

A. free countries from foreign rules B. speed up social progress

昆明理工大学2010年博士研究生招生考试试题 [~t yDLC

C. give people freedom D. liberate people from any exploitation

56. Ideally, the goal of the program of Education for All is to ______ by 2015.

A. get all the world’s children to complete primary school

B. enroll all the world’s children into primary school

C. give quality education to people of 88 countries

D. support those committed to transforming their education systems

57. According to the passage, which of the following is NOT mentioned as the right policy?

A. Raising the efficiency of education systems.

B. Improving the quality of education.

C. Using information technologies.

D. Building more primary schools.

58. As can be gathered from the last paragraph, foreign aid ______.

A. may not be highly effective

B. is provided only when some criteria are met

C. alone makes development possible

D. is most effective for those countries lagging farthest behind

Passage 3 `zY!`G

Questions 59 to 62 are based on the following passage. e"~)Utk

In the United States, it is not customary to telephone someone early in the morning. If you telephone him early in the day, while he is shaving or having breakfast, the time of the call shows that the matter is very important and requires immediate attention. The same meaning is attached to telephone calls made after 11:00 p.m.. If someone receives a call during sleeping hours, he assumes it’s a matter of life and death. The time chosen for the call communicates its importance.

In social life, time plays a very important part. In the U.S.A., guests tend to feel they are not highly regarded if the invitation to a dinner party is extended only three or four days before the party date. But it is not true in all countries. In other areas of the world it may be considered foolish to make an appointment too far in advance because plans which are made for a date more than a week away tend to be forgotten. The meaning of time differs in different parts of the world. Thus, misunderstandings arise between people form cultures that treat time differently; promptness is valued highly in American life, for example. If people are not prompt, they may be regarded as impolite or not fully responsible. In the U.S. no one would think of keeping a business friend waiting for an hour; it would be too impolite. A person who is 5 minutes late is expected to make a short apology. If he is less than 5 minutes late, he will say a few words of explanation, though perhaps he will not complete the sentence.

59. “The same meaning is attached to telephone calls made after 11:00 p.m.”. Here “attached” means ______.

A. taken B. drawn C. given D. shown

60. Supposing one wants to make a telephone call at midnight, this would mean ______.

A. the matter is less important B. the matter is somewhat important

C. the matter requires immediate attention D. it is a matter of life and death

61. According to this passage, time plays an important role in ______.

A. everyday life B. private life C. communications D. transmission

Another CEO scolded managers in front of others, cut one third of the work force and so embittered (激怒) the survivors that his airline began to lose money, and the board of directors (董事会) fired him.

In any test of knowledge or IQ, the two CEOs would have dueled to a draw (不分胜负). The difference was their ability to handle relationships, argues Daniel Goleman in his new book, Working With Emotional Intelligence. Building on his 1995 best-seller, Emotional Intelligence, Goleman now probes how EI relates to the world of work. As he did in his earlier book, Goleman masterfully explains how a low EI hinders people’s full intellectual potential by flooding the brain with stress hormones (荷尔蒙) that impair (削弱) memory, learning and thinking. The heart of the book, though, is an analysis of data collected from more than 150 firms on what distinguishes so-so performers from superstars. Goleman’s findings: conventional intelligence takes second position to emotional intelligence in determining job performance.

In jobs ranging from repairman to scientist, IQ accounts for no more than 25 percent of the difference between, say, a successful high-tech entrepreneur and a failed one. In another surprise, the contribution of IQ shrinks and the contribution of EI rises with the difficulty of a job and how high it ranks in an organization. Based on traits that companies say distinguish winners from losers, Goleman concludes that EI carries much more weight that IQ in determining success at the top.

However, the many examples of CEOs and other people in top positions who have the emotional intelligence of a snake – but still were CEOs – undermine the case for EI’s indispensability in business. But even if you accept that EI determines who excels, you have to wonder if it should. Goleman describes how 112 entry-level (初级的) accountants were judged more or less successful by their bosses according to their level of EI rather than their actual skills. No wonder so many auditors（审计员）fail to notice cooked books.

Passage 5 C Oa.xyp

Questions 67 to 70 are based on the following passage. CpSK(2j

The existence of both racial and sexual discrimination in employment is well documented, and policy makers and responsible employers are particularly sensitive to the plight of the black female employee on the theory that she is doubly the victim of discrimination. That there exist differences in income between whites and blacks is clear, but it is not so clear that these differences are solely the result of racial discrimination in employment. The two groups differ in productivity, so basic economics dictates that their incomes will differ.

To obtain a true measure of the effect of racial discrimination in employment it is necessary to adjust the gross black/white income ratio for these productivity factors. White women in urban areas have a higher educational level than black women and can be expected to receive larger incomes. Moreover, State distribution of residence is important because blacks are overrepresented in the South, where wage rates are typically lower than elsewhere and where racial differentials in income are greater. Also, blacks are overrepresented in large cities, and incomes of blacks would be greater if blacks were distributed among cities of different sizes in the same manner as whites.

After standardization for the productivity factors, the income of black urban women is estimated to be between 108 and 125 percent of the income of white women. This indicates that productivity factors more than account for the actual white/black income differential for women. Despite their greater education, white women’s actual average income is only 2 to 5 percent higher than that of black women in the North. Unlike the situation of men, the evidence indicates that the money income of black urban women was as great as, or greater than, that of whites of similar productivity in the North, and probably in the United States as a whole.

At least two possible hypotheses may explain why the adjustment for productivity more than accounts for the observed income differential for women. First, there may be more discrimination against black men than against black women. The different occupational structures for men and women give some indication why this could be the case. Second, the data are consistent with the hypothesis that the intensity of discrimination against women differs little between whites and blacks. Therefore, racial discrimination adds little to effects of existing sex discrimination. These findings suggest that a black woman does not necessarily suffer relatively more discrimination in the labor market than does a white woman. Rather, for women, the effects of sexual discrimination are so pervasive that the effects of racial discrimination are negligible.

67. The primary purpose of the passage is to ______.

A. explain the reasons for the existence of income differentials between men and women

B. show that racial discrimination against black women in employment is less important than sexual discrimination

C. explore the ways in which productivity factors influence the earning power of black workers

D. sketch a history of racial and sexual discrimination against black and female workers in the labor market

68. Which of the following best describes the logical relationship between the two hypotheses presented in the fourth paragraph?

A. They may both be true since each phenomenon could contribute to the observed differential.

B. They are contradictory, and if one is proved to be correct, the other is proved incorrect.

C. They are independent of each other, and it is hard to establish any relationship between them.

D. The two hypotheses are logically connected so that it is impossible to prove either one to be true without also proving the other to be true.

69. If the second hypothesis mentioned by the author is correct, a general lessening of discrimination against women should lead to a(n) ______.

A. higher white/black income ratio for women

B. lower white/black income ratio for women

C. lower female/male income ratio

D. increase in the productivity of women

70. The author’s attitude toward racial and sexual discrimination in employment is one of ______.

A. apology

B. concern

C. indifference

D. indignation

1. Youth is not a time of life; it is a state of mind; it is not a matter of rosy cheeks, red lips and supple knees; it is a matter of the will, a quality of the imagination; a vigor of the emotions; it is the freshness of the deep spring of life. i0i.sizu

2. Most of the power generated by mankind originates from the sun. It was sunlight that nurtured the early life that became today’s oil, gas and coal. It is the solar heating of the Earth’s atmosphere and oceans that fuels wave power, wind farms and hydroelectric schemes. But using the sun’s energy directly to generate power is rare. Solar cell accounts for less than 1% of the world’s electricity production. Kc%tnVyGh:
